Why a wet wall insulates poorly

Moisture in the brickwork costs heat. Here is how to keep your facade dry and your home warmer.

Dry brickwork insulates better

A brick saturated with moisture conducts heat outwards far faster than a dry one. You are effectively heating your own facade. With a properly executed impregnation treatment the insulation value of your home rises by up to 25%, simply because the wall stays dry.

Where the moisture gets in

  • Worn or loose pointing
  • Hairline cracks in the brick or the bed joint
  • Poorly sealed or shallow-cut lead
  • A chimney without a cap, catching rain from every side

Impregnation is not a coat of paint

The agent soaks into the brick and lets the facade breathe. That is an important difference from cavity wall insulation, where no airflow is possible. Moisture that does get in has to be able to get out again.

Clean and sound first, then dry

Impregnating over a dirty or cracked facade seals the problem in. Clean, repair the pointing, allow two weeks of drying and only then impregnate: that is the order that works.
