Replacing lead: what to look out for

18-pound lead, stainless steel clips and the right cutting depth.

Good leadwork lasts decades

We use 18-pound lead. Lighter lead buckles sooner, sits less evenly and works loose earlier with temperature swings. The difference in material cost is small, the difference in lifespan large.

Cutting depth decides everything

The joint is cut back to around 6 cm. Cutting in too shallow is by far the most common cause of leadwork coming loose after a few years. Rain then runs behind it and soaks into the brickwork.

Stainless steel clips, no alternative

Clips in other materials rust or give way. Stainless steel stays put and does not stain the facade.

Combine it with the pointing

Lead replacement works into the same brickwork as the pointing repair. Do them together and the scaffolding goes up once. We always assess whether the existing fitting can be improved first.
