Green growth is a moisture problem
Green growth appears where it stays damp for long periods. That is almost always the north or west facade, or a wall kept out of the sun by trees and shrubs. The growth is the result, not the cause.
Hosing it off only helps briefly
A pressure washer removes the green layer quickly, but it returns as soon as it gets wet again. Worse, high pressure damages the pointing, so the facade absorbs more moisture and the growth comes back faster.
What does work
- Pre-treatment with a powerful detergent that loosens the growth
- Rinsing with warm water at a pressure that suits the brickwork
- Repairing pointing where it has worn away
- Impregnating, so the facade no longer absorbs moisture
And the greenery around it
Cut back shrubs and trees growing against the facade and keep the gutter clear. More light and air along the wall makes years of difference.
